Healthy Life on Vacation
Those road trip snacks, all-you-can-eat buffets and amusement park ice cream stands can ruin any chance of healthy eating while traveling. Whether you pack your own snacks or read restaurant menus in advance, you can keep to your diet this summer.
How do you eat healthfully while on vacation?
For me i just do several things.
1. Discuss with my family where we might be eating out. When possible I go on-line and see if the restaurant is there with their menus. This way I can plan ahead what appeals to me.
2. I have also emailed certain restaurants to see if they can cater for a vegetarian diabetic.
3. I check with the airline to see what meals are available and request one accordingly.
4. I take snacks with me on the plane too. I usually take nuts, e.g. cashews or pistashioes.
5. At all-you-can-eat buffets I go around first to see what is available and then take little helpings on my second pass.
6. I usually go to Sport Club with my sister and we take our own food for breakfast and snacks. Plenty of bottled water goes with me. Also healthy snack bars for a snack between breakfast and lunch. We also take fruit with us so we can nibble between meals.
When I am home with my parents I cook my own meals which are meat substitutes. I fell in love with Morningstar products, which sadly aren't available here in England.
I do treat myself with things that aren't available here. It's still my vacation! But I don't go wild. The soft pretzel or TandyKake won't hurt nor the triple cheese hoagie. My goal next year is to get a hot fudge sundae.
Oh, when I was there this year I lost 5 pounds.
